Save those Sidewalks
November 2nd, 2004 Many of our Garden Party friends have very alkaline soils with a white crust forming on the top of the soil and the sidewalk. If the problem is severe enough, the sidewalk will start to flake and almost melt away. The same can happen to the stucco on the side of your house. This can be potentially very damaging to your home and can cost an enormous amount of money if not corrected. We have an easy inexpensive solution that will save your home (if not your marriage). Simply dig a trench as close to the effected structure that is 6″ to 10″ deep. Sprinkle a ½” thick layer of Soil Sulphur at the bottom of the trench. Cover up the trench with soil. This will stop the alkali damage quickly and permanently. For fast temporary relief, use a solution of one part vinegar and one part water. Spray the solution on the white crusty surfaces. The alkali will disappear fast, but the solution will have to be reapplied.

Start your Tomatoes Early
November 2nd, 2004 We have a quick and easy way to get a head start on planting those tomatoes without having to build a greenhouse. Some of our listeners have done this for years with great success. The best insulator (for both hot and cold) is the earth. We can use this to grow tomatoes much earlier. Use a posthole digger to dig a hole 18″ to 24″ deep and about 6″ to 8″ wide. Place your tomato plant in the bottom of the hole and fill in with enough soil to cover up the root ball and 2″ to 4″ of the stem of the plant. As the plant grows, you can cover more and more of the plant forming a great root system will using the earth to protect the tomato from the weather. If you plant real early, you can use a clear bowl to cover the top of the hole for even more protection.
