Start your Tomatoes Early
November 2nd, 2004 We have a quick and easy way to get a head start on planting those tomatoes without having to build a greenhouse. Some of our listeners have done this for years with great success. The best insulator (for both hot and cold) is the earth. We can use this to grow tomatoes much earlier. Use a posthole digger to dig a hole 18″ to 24″ deep and about 6″ to 8″ wide. Place your tomato plant in the bottom of the hole and fill in with enough soil to cover up the root ball and 2″ to 4″ of the stem of the plant. As the plant grows, you can cover more and more of the plant forming a great root system will using the earth to protect the tomato from the weather. If you plant real early, you can use a clear bowl to cover the top of the hole for even more protection. |
